4/02/08 - Got the application for
summer residence camp!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3/20/08 - Another
Reading Achievement test! He chose Junie B. Jones
again; Junie B Jones Loves Handsome Warren.
Out of the 10 questions he got nine right. He
couldn't remember this time which one he forgot.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2/13/08 - During the Parent/Teacher
conference back on 2/7, I requested, to the Intervention
Specialist who attends all meetings, that Hunter be
evaluated for assistive technology in hopes he would be
provided a Neo by Alphasmart to help with his writing.
I made it clear that this device would in no way
overrule Hunter's OT IEP goals. As he goes along
in school he'll be required to write longer assignments
and if he has one, it could possibly remove the need for
a scribe during his tests (which they have used for more
than just the 3rd grade achievement tests). I also
want an Alphasmart, which is only for writing; no
special features like a lap top. It's designed for
kids so is rugged and portable. Another reason I
requested one is because Hunter has all these stories in
his head. He talks to himself all the time and I
shared with you about the story of the people/creatures
making snow forts on vehicle windows. I offered a
new notebook and pencils just for writing it down, but
he declined because he knows his printing isn't very
good and says it makes his hand hurt. I offered to write
it down for him, but he said no and was unable to tell
me why.
I got a letter
reply from the Intervention Specialist (IS) that
declined my request. I had mentioned looking into
getting Hunter typing lessons, and they are all for
that, but to use the computer at home. I don't
want to do that because there are way too many
distractions at this computer; the size, all the keys,
the features. The fact that he can play games and watch
cartoons on it. It's also pretty much in the
center of the house with TV and little brother
distractions. I want it just for him and his
writing to go where ever in the house, when ever he
wants to write.
Now that I've
thought about it, I am in disagreement with the denial,
but am hesitant if I should pursue my train of thought.
My first reason is that my request being denied was not
a team decision. The only people who apparently
heard my request and saw the information I provided on
the Alphasmart was the IS and the OT. An IEP is
created with a whole group of people, plus the parents.
Therefore, I feel it might be important to point out
this wasn't a team decision.
My other feeling is
that my request for an assistive technology evaluation
was either forgotten or ignored. I've learned from
another mom in another school/state, that had to request
this type of eval three times before it was done and her
child was determined to be needing the equipment the mom
was pushing for. However, another mom pointed out
that if Tim and I buy the Neo for Hunter ourselves, it's
his forever and not to be returned to the school.
She also told me that she saw Neo's on eBay at Buy It
Now prices of $50 when brand new they are $240.00.
We also have our tax return coming and I could possibly
use some of it toward a Neo.
Part of me wants to
push the school into helping Hunter in this way, and
part of me just wants to drop it and not have the
hassle. If any of you have any advice or
experience, please
share it
with me.

Teacher's
Comments
| November
Hunter is off to a good
start. He is doing well in most
subject areas. When writing, Hunter
needs to remember to use capital letters
correctly. Hunter is putting for a
good effort. Keep it up.
|
| January
Hunter continues to
improve in many areas. He still needs
to work on writing so he's able to read it.
If he takes his time, he can do it.
Good report card, Hunter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On 1/15/08, Hunter took his second Reading
Achievement test. He chose Junie B. Jones and
the Stupid, Smelly Box by Barbara Park. He was
asked ten questions and got all ten correct!
I feel he did so
well on this important exam because he was able to chose
his own book. Had he been given a book to read,
one that he wasn't particularly interested in, I doubt
his score would have been so high.
With Devin, and now Bryce
in my life, I no longer volunteer at the school or attend all
school parties and functions. I don't take nearly as many
school related pictures nowadays as I did in the past. :(
I'm going to try and get all that I have here for you to see.
